How to Stop Teeth Grinding While Sleeping

There are so many people that are grinding teeth during nocturnal hours. Because people usually are not aware what happens when they are asleep, teeth grinding while sleeping is usually not paid with particular attention.

You may not be aware of it, but there is a great chance that you are suffering from this condition. Teeth grinding while sleeping is not actually a disease, but it is becoming a popular concern among people.

You may not be able to directly tell if you are a nocturnal teeth grinder. That is because it is a human nature not to be able to determine any unconscious activities during sleeping hours. You may not know it, but you could be a victim of teeth grinding while sleeping.

Your family or roommate could tell you that you are grinding your teeth in sleep. And they may do so not because they are too concerned, but because they are often annoyed by the sound you make in the middle of the night. People do not normally think something is wrong when there are teeth grinding while sleeping.

That is true. But looking closely at the condition, there is still so much things to care about. Teeth grinding while sleeping is not a very serious condition, but still, there must be measures you should take to curtail that involuntary habit of yours.

Causes and implications

Before knowing the ways to stop teeth grinding while sleeping, it would be more appropriate and helpful if you would first get the knowledge of its causes and its possible implications. Knowing the cause and the effect might provide enough motivation for you to stop that sleep-hour habit.

For a start, there are just three identified main culprits that make people grind their teeth when they are asleep. Stress is identified as the greatest contributing factor for teeth grinding while sleeping. You see, your body needs an outlet for releasing stress and since you are asleep at night, it makes its own action, thus, there is the involuntary grinding of teeth.

Mental problems are also identified to cause teeth grinding while sleeping. Just like stress, problems on the mind might be exhibited and ventilated at sleep. Lastly, misalignment of teeth can cause teeth grinding while sleeping.

Effects of this habit includes loosening of teeth, chipping of enamel on teeth surface, jaw pains and heightened sensitivity to temperature especially inside the mouth.

Stop teeth grinding while sleeping

The primary way to stop teeth grinding while sleeping would be to address the three identified main causes. Relieve your body from stress, consult experts if you have mental issues and see your dentist if there is a misalignment of teeth. Other than these, here are several more measures you could take:

- The most recommended step to initially curtail teeth grinding while sleeping is to purchase a mouth guard. Your dentist could help you at this. The mouth guard should be worn at night before getting to bed. Doing so would help prevent yourself from unconsciously grinding your teeth at night. Once done regularly, your body would be conditioned not to do the same thing again.

- Hypnosis is now becoming a popular way of relieving ailments. You should try it out to help break your habit of teeth grinding while sleeping.

- Counseling should also be taken to help you more effectively to de-stress. When you are de-stressed, your muscles would relax and you could prevent teeth grinding while sleeping. Tranquilizers could also be an option.

The FYI on Gum Disease

Do you wonder about the health of your gums? Have you ever seen red, puffy or bleeding gums upon brushing or flossing. Have you grown, 'long in the tooth'? Have you lost any teeth due to gum disease? Know anyone else that has?

Eighty percent of American adults suffer from some form of gum disease according to the Mayo Clinic website. The question begs to be answered, why? Eighty percent? That is quite a high number. No one ever talks about gum disease which leads me to believe that out of that eighty percent, few realize they suffer from it. Eighty percent equates to eight out of ten people.

That means most of the people you know, possibly including yourself, suffer from some form of gum disease. Many people may not know that they have gum disease. They may in the future, though, because eventually their dentist will tell them that they need a 'root scaling and planing', surgery or periodontal work done.

The Surgeon General once described gum disease as a silent epidemic. Studies keep surfacing that suggest that gum disease may be a precursor to larger problems such as heart disease. Gum disease may be a route that bacteria and other pathogens enter the body through. Having gum disease means that you have left an open door to infection.

Despite all of this, few people talk about gum disease and even fewer are doing anything about it. I can foresee a day when people will pay particular attention to their oral health, because it will become common knowledge of just how serious the situation with our gum tissue is.

Unfortunately, many people will lose precious gum tissue before they even realize that they have this disease or before their dentist mentions it to them. That is why the time is precisely now to start working on this, regardless of what stage of oral health you are at. Protecting your gum tissue is protecting your overall health if all the suspected links to other disease are real.

If you are anything like me, you went for quite some time thinking it didn't matter if your gums bled a little during brushing or flossing. Nothing is further from the truth. If you experience any bleeding at all while brushing and flossing, that is probably indicating an abnormal and possibly diseased condition. Check with your dentist for diagnosis and treatment.

Since eighty percent of adult Americans suffer from this disease it is reasonable to suspect that the preventative measures of brushing and flossing that we were all taught are not adequate to prevent or stop gum disease. If you are like me, you found that you have suffered from this disease and have lost bone and tissue as result.

I was determined not to lose any teeth to this villain and researched and tested a number of tools that I could use to arrest the progress of gum disease and keep it away. I wrote the Gingivitis Killer website to report what I have found. This article is for informative purposes only, check with your dentist if you have or think you might have gum disease for diagnosis and treatment.

How To Choose A Dentist

Choosing a dentist is an important decision. Not all dentists have the same level of training or expertise, and choosing the wrong one can be a costly and painful mistake.

If you're new in town or you're looking for a new dentist, ask friends and co-workers for referrals. This is perhaps the best way of finding a good dentist. Ask you friends, neighbors, or co-workers if they go to a dentist they are impressed with.

Before you make an appointment, you may want to consider the following:

• Do they accept my insurance? This is one of the first things you'll want to consider. Not all plans accept all dentists, so call either your provider or the dentist's office and make sure they take your insurance.

• Is the dentist a member of the ADA? (American Dental Association). Most dentists are, but it's still a good idea to make sure. Members of the ADA are required to abide by a certain code of ethics. In addition, they are also required to participate in continuing education, so they are as up-to-date in their field as possible.

• Does the dentist have a lot of experience? Make sure the dentist has been practicing for an adequate number of years so that he is experienced and can treat you in the best way possible. In addition, if you are seeing a dentist for a specific reason (ie, restoration or cosmetic), make sure he or she is specialized in that area first.

• Are the dentist and staff members good communicators? The staff and dentist should be willing to thoroughly answer any questions or address any concerns you may have. If they are unfriendly, unhelpful, or seem too busy to talk to you, consider looking elsewhere.

• Is the office clean? When you get to the office, check the surroundings. Make sure the practice is clean and that hygiene matters are obviously being followed (ie, dentist and hygienists are wearing gloves and masks, tools are properly sterilized, etc.).

• Is the latest technology being utilized? The dentist should be using the most up-to-date technology, materials, and procedures to provide you with the best treatment possible. If the office and its equipment look outdated and run-down, find a different dentist.

• Does the dentist provide options and plans? Your dentist and his or her staff should be willing to provide you with a wide range of treatment plans and options. In addition, if you have a lot of work to be done, make sure they are flexible with payment plans.

• Is the dentist available? Check the office hours. Are they strictly 9-5, or can they see you in the evenings or weekends if necessary? See what the average wait time for scheduling an appointment is. Will you be able to get an appointment fairly quickly, or will you be waiting for two months? Ask what their policy is for emergencies. Also, check the waiting room. If it is crowded and the patients have been waiting long or appear irritated, it may be a sign the office is not sufficiently run, or they double book patients.

Colorado's Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform - 208 Commission - Needn't Act In Haste

As the year progresses and the 208 Commission pursues its lofty and noble goal to discover the secret to quality accessible affordable health care for all Coloradans, the stakes continue to rise. It would be difficult if not impossible to find an informed person who does not agree that a crisis exists, and that a solution is needed. However, that does not mean that the 208 Commission should rush this process simply to say that they did something about it. It also goes without saying that taking the wrong steps at this time will exacerbate the problem leaving us with an even higher price to pay.

The central issue we face in addressing the health care system's woes is identifying the root cause of the problem. It would be simple for us to point fingers at the isolated activities of health care providers, the government, employers, patients, attorneys, or any other system participant. It may be more fruitful for us to look at the structural elements of the system that drive their behavior to identify what needs to be fixed to improve the quality of health care thereby lowing its cost and making it not "universal", but "universally affordable". In other words, those who want it would be able to inexpensively purchase it, and those who do n0t want it would not be forced to have it.

Too many of the system participants I have identified above consider treatment to be the product or service of health care. The fact is, good health is the product, and good health is less expensive than poor health. Building consensus around this fact is the foundation of the solution to the problem. When that is done, we can then start the good, but difficult work, of focusing all system participants' behaviors on maximizing value at the point of patient care (i.e., getting them back to optimal health as quickly and inexpensively as possible). All financial incentives should be centered on rewarding providers who are able to bring the most value to the patient at this level. All other current incentives and ineffective processes should be systematically ended – and too many of them exist today.

In order for us to base incentives and rewards on maximized value, we will need to come to an agreement on and commit to: (1) the methodology and uniform application of health care costing techniques, (2) fairly developed risk-adjusted outcomes metrics, and (3) the form and accessibility of this information to everyone. How else can patients, employers, health plans, health care providers, or any other interested party evaluate results for purposes of selecting, rewarding, encouraging providers to make quality improvements, or if necessary avoiding ineffective high cost providers?

Historically health care consumers have not shopped for health care based on results. They have taken the attitude that all health care is the same, or worse, that more costly health care is better health care. When you peel back the proverbial layers of the health care onion, you quickly see that when health is defined as the product and all system participants act to maintain and improve health, that the current level of spending on health care becomes unnecessary. Medical technologies and processes that bring little or questionable value cannot endure when patients have relevant facts and an understanding of how to apply those facts in the face of the complexities of health care decisions.

If this sounds overly simplified to you, it may be because for years we have overcomplicated this issue by addressing obvious cost-drivers as they have emerged instead of the focus and structure of competition in health care itself. We all win when patients direct themselves, or are directed, to providers who maximize patient value through their focus and experience across the entire cycle of care for specific medical conditions. Until we all have access to the kind of information that drives providers to this level of focus and quality we will continue to lose money to this problem. Mandating universal health care without fixing the system through which it is delivered only magnifies the problem.

In the end, the 208 Commission has a responsibility to not act out of a self-created feeling of necessity, but out of informed judgment when the time is right. Clearly every proposal they receive will contain well-made cases and demonstrated facts. When those facts and resulting proposals are run through a filter that determines if they directly or indirectly increase or maximize the value of care at the level of treatment of a medical condition for a patient, it will become apparent if the recommendations should be followed or not.

I sincerely hope the members of the 208 Commission will incorporate this thinking into their decision making process, and will not allow their stated goals and arbitrary deadlines to take on a life of their own leading them to making premature recommendations to the legislature. The stakes are too high and we all stand to lose too much if that happens.

Teeth Whitening, Why Yes?

One...Two....Three...say cheese ...( a photographer trying to take your photograph ) Wide smile?

Tooth...Teeth...White Teeth. Definitely I am so sure, that everybody will love to see clean, white and bright teeth. 100% guaranteed. So well, I can say that the existence of beautiful white teeth is what everybody wants to be part of their life. Why? Because every human love to be admired. Including you and me...that is why I write this.

It is a kind of disturbance to all of us, to see in the mirror, the kind of teeth we have...yet we don't have maybe the clean...white teeth. Mostly, it can affect our self confidence...and even our self esteem, and radically to self hatred. So, I can say that most of us agree that white teeth is important.

Then ..the problem of "non white teeth" (commonly yellow, but in some cases I see greenish, brownish, and even black), usually comes up after a very long period of mistreating the teeth. I am not talking about genetic factor of "non white teeth", but I put attention to the "non white teeth" problem that happen to most of us. Statistically, it is around 90% of the "non white teeth" cases occurs because of mistreating the teeth.Yes...for every long period of mistreating the teeth causes accumulative damage to the real color of the teeth. Some of the causes, as you already knew, are tea, coffee, cigarette, certain artificial food coloring, antibiotic, etc

Now.. just imagine, You can get your teeth back in white. Is it possible? Yes. Teeth Whitening Treatment is the answer.

Many cosmetic dentistry experts has already come up with new solution to teeth whitening. Just like what I said that everybody love to see white teeth...so it is new market to the business. Many medical manufacturer produce millions product to support teeth whitening treatment. But that's not the point. New technology has arrived to provide the best treatment, best products to re-whiten the teeth, starts from a very cheap and simple method, even personal treatment that we can do it ourselves, like teeth whitening product of tooth paste, gel, liquid, until the luxury clinic that provide holistic care, professional teeth whitening system to your dental treatment needs, such as whitening teeth, bleaching teeth, rebuild or implant artificial new teeth, cosmetic dentistry, etc.

So...again, You just get your teeth whiten back...How do you feel? Who do you see in the mirror? The best of you? Feel that you can conquer the world again....after losing it for miserable teeth? What does your family say? What do your friends say?

What I am trying to say is do whatever it takes to get your teeth back in white. Get teeth whitening. And get your life back.

How To Choose A Dentist

It can be hard to muster up the courage to visit the dentist. It can be even harder deciding which of the many in the phone book to go to. Although there is no perfect dentist for every person, knowing what your needs are and what to look for in a good dentist can help you decide which one will suit you.

Dentists are required to be licensed and hold one of two equivalent doctorate degrees: a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.) degree or a doctor of dental medicine (D.M.D.) degree. Dentists must complete two years of pre-dental college work followed by four years of dental school. However, the majority of dental students actually have a baccalaureate degree. Because of all the training required to become a dentist and the costs associated with that, there are many dentists out there that are driven by the money they can make rather than the quality of work they can produce and the health of their patients.

There are some specific things that you should look for in a dentist in order to determine if he/she has your health and best interests at heart. Some of the things that should be characteristics of a good dentist are:

• They show a genuine interest in you and your health.

• They focus a lot on prevention.

• They take x-rays unless suitable films are available from your previous dentist.

• They perform a thorough dental examination that includes inspection of the teeth, gums, tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, palate, and the skin of the face and neck. This also includes a feeling of the neck for abnormal lymph nodes and enlargement of the thyroid gland. In adults a periodontal probe should be inserted between the gums and teeth to detect abnormally large crevices.

• They chart their findings in detail.

• They send reminders out to let you know when your next appointment is.

• They take time to make sure the job is done right and meticulous attention is spent on details of your dental work. Dental work is not meant to be done like you are part of an assembly line, rather each situation is different and should be treated as such. Remember that high-quality dental work will last a long time, whereas low-quality work may fall out or decay in a few years.

Regular check-ups are the key to preventative oral hygiene. Everyone should have routine tooth cleanings, bite evaluations, periodontal examinations, early interventions, and fluoride treatments in order to avoid costly repairs. Depending on your specific situation, you may need to have more frequent maintenance than the average person. For example, if during your assessment it is determined that you have cavities, you may need to schedule appointments over the next few months to get them treated. However, once your treatment is completed, your dentist should place you on a recall schedule to be notified when your next checkup is due, usually every six months.

Make sure you know what results you want to see before embarking on any treatment. This will help you to determine how well you like your dentist and his/her work. Also, consider treatment options, because there may be more than one way to accomplish a goal.

Along with things to look for in a good dentist, there are also warning signs for things to beware of in a poor dentist or poor dental practices. Although these signs may not indicate that a dentist is bad, they are things you will want to look into before committing to any type of treatment. Some of these include:

• Flamboyant advertising. This may signify an emphasis on mass production rather than quality care.

• Advertising that overemphasizes cosmetic dentistry or one-visit comprehensive treatments, because they may not be interested in long-term maintenance care that does not generate high income.

• Low fees charged per service can sometimes mean that the number of services performed is high which results in a higher overall cost.

In summary, take care to learn what is actually important to your dentist. The best dentists out there are concerned about your dental health, not making a quick buck off of you.

Dental Health and Bad Breath

Poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease can be a source of bad breath. If you don't brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, collecting bacteria and emitting hydrogen sulfur vapors. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth.

If not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums (gingivitis) and cause tooth decay, Eventually, plaque-filled pockets can form between your teeth and gums (periodontitis), worsening this problem and your breath. Dentures that aren't cleaned regularly or do not fit properly also can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.

If you do not brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Food that collects between the teeth, on the tongue and around the gums can rot, leaving an unpleasant odor. Dentures that are not cleaned properly can also harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.

One of the warning signs of periodontal (gum) disease is persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, the sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. The bacteria create toxins that irritate the gums. In the advanced stage of the disease, the gums, bone and other structures that support the teeth become damaged. With regular dental checkups, your dentist can detect and treat periodontal disease early.

Bad breath is also caused by dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continuously breathing through the mouth. If you suffer from dry mouth, your dentist may prescribe an artificial saliva, or suggest you using sugarless candy and increasing your fluid intake.

Eliminating periodontal disease and maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath. Schedule regular dental visits for a professional cleaning and checkup. If you think you have constant bad breath, keep a log of the foods you eat and make a list of medications you take. Some medications may play a role in creating mouth odors. Let your dentist know if you've had any surgery or illness since your last appointment.

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Brush your tongue, too. Once a day, use floss or an interdental cleaner to clean between teeth. If you wear removal dentures take them at night. Clean them thoroughly before replacing them the next morning.

Mouthwashes are generally cosmetic and do not have a long-lasting effect on bad breath. If you must constantly use a breath freshener to hide unpleasant mouth odor, see your dentist, If you need extra help in controlling plaque, your dentist may recommend using a special antimicrobial mouth rinse. A fluoride mouth rinse, used along with brushing and flossing, can prevent tooth decay.

Regular checkups will allow your dentist to detect any problems such as periodontal disease, a dry mouth or other disorders that may be the cause. Maintaining good oral hygiene, eliminating periodontal disease and scheduling regular professional cleanings are essential to reducing bad breath.

Dental Patient Education Tools

New systems offering quality patient education videos are now available to help dentists explain the ideal dental treatment to suit patients needs. Offered in DVD format as well as various computer based formats, these videos can add a professional aspect to any dental office.

It is always a challenge for a dentist to explain complex dental treatment options to their patients. As a dental professional it is important to utilize the proper tools to make this task appear professional to the patient, and accomplish this with the least impact on existing dental office procedures.

Repeating explanations by you or your staff can result in fatigue and worse, inconsistent messages reaching the patients. If your staff is sick and tired of explaining what a root canal is and why you need to have a crown done to finish the procedure, then, at least some of the time the message is not going to get through to the patient.

A professionally produced DVD based patient education system allows for consistent presentation of material to each and every patient. Since it is so easy to just click on the selection and just let it play for the patient, no one will complain about the "complexity of the technology". It takes the same skill to operate as the last DVD that you or your staff person rented at Blockbuster.

By using a quality DVD Patient Education system the fatigue of repetitive explanations is eliminated. This keeps the staff fresh to answer patient questions and really engage in a dialogue about why your recommended treatment is the best choice for the patient to use. Once the patient is able to fully understand your recommended treatment plan the likelihood that they will be enthusiastic about moving forward with the plan is vastly enhanced.

The Convenience of Mobility Scooters For The Handicap and Disabled

A mobility scooter is a great alternative for those who may limited in their movement, but still like to be active. For a variety of medical conditions, such as severe arthritis or stroke, a mobility scooter will allows more independence. Mobility scooters have emerged for some people as an alternative to other types of equipment, such as a wheelchair. For the handicap and disabled population, a mobility scooter allows them to participate in a more active lifestyle.

While mobility scooters for the handicap are not for everyone who is disabled, they can be of assistance to many. There great for people who cannot walk long distances or are easily fatigued. Mobility scooters allow people to continue to take care of themselves and be able to run errands, such as going to the grocery store. In addition to assisting those with certain medical conditions, these scooters can also be helpful for people who have progressive condition, such as muscular dystrophy.

The changes in design for mobility scooters for the handicap have also helped to account for their increased popularity. Unlike the designs of the past, many of today's scooters are lightweight, and some can be easily disassembled and stored when not in use, or during transport. The rise of electric power has also made these scooters more accessible. Now, instead of worrying about fuel, the electric models are simply plugged into the wall. Mobility scooters for the handicap also incorporate a variety of comfortable features. Many have a wide chair that is easy to sit in for long periods of time. There is also storage compartments, including a basket for easy access, and mirrors that give the driver an increased view. These features and more, help the driver feel comfortable and in control of their driving experience.

In some cases, scooter purchases are eligible for medicare reimbursement. Many larger companies that sell scooters will have an in-house person who takes care of the paperwork and will help you determine whether medicare will reimburse the mobility scooter purchase. A major consideration for medicare is the intended use. Usually a scooter will not be approved just for leisure or outside the home. It needs to be for inside home use, and necessary for a person to handle daily tasks. Of course, there are many other requirements, but some people are able to purchase scooters, and get reimbursed through Medicare, depending on their situation.

Mobility scooters for the handicap and disabled offer increased movement and independence. While not for everyone, many people find that a scooter has greatly increased the quality of their life, and they couldn't imagine living without one. If you are considering mobility aids, you may want to take a closer look at an electric mobility scooter.

How To Save Expenses With A Scooter Rental

Occasionally there is a short-term need for a wheel chair and they can be costly to buy, even one that is used. This is when the option of a scooter rental can come in handy. Being able to rent a wheel chair for a short time, many times the price of which is covered by insurance, can help when recovering from an accident or illness.

Another advantage of a scooter rental is that if something goes wrong with the wheel chair you're renting, it will be replaced at no extra cost with one that works. The medical supply company you're working with should be very understanding if you need your unit replaced for whatever reason.

With that said, your wheel chair should arrive in clean and good working order regardless. With a scooter rental, it's rare that a chair will not arrive in good, clean working order. In the event that this does happen, a simple phone call should replace the wheel chair for you in speedy fashion.

Keep Track Of Rates And Accessories

If you're renting a wheel chair, you should also be able to rent other things you need temporarily, such as carrying totes or arms totes. Some companies will supply them free of fees as a perk to customers. Other companies may charge for their use, and you should check this out before you read from a particular company, depending on what your insurance will cover.

A scooter rental is also beneficial because there is usually no fees for pickup or delivery. You simply phone and arrange for the wheel chair to be delivered. At the end of the rental, the company should simply be happy to come and pick it up. You can also usually extend the wheel chair period if you need it longer than you originally thought.

There are many types of scooter rental units available with manual types as well as the powered wheel chair, and some companies are willing to rent you a power wheel chair for you to try in hopes that you will decide to buy one. Being able to use a power wheel chair, even on a temporary basis, can help the user see the benefits of not depending on the manual type for mobility.

Of course, "try before you buy," or in this case, rent. You'll need to see if the chair you chose fits through all spaces in your house and allows you to maneuver well. The rental company will likely have ideas for you if the one you chose does not fit, and they can bring you back one that does better.

Focal Infection Theory Disbelievers and Reality

Others can live in body tissues without causing any apparent local irritations while they wait for a new home site in some other organ or tissue. Still others of the invading species are able to generate toxins either outside or inside cell walls. Some even limit their activity to the cells of the bloodstream.

These numerous attributes of organisms which arise from focal infection sites, whether they be from teeth, tonsils, tonsil tags, sinuses, or any other focal infection source, do cause an infinite variety of local and systemic reactions and conditions.

The concern of my profession is with the effects of dental infections. Dr.Price found the organs or tissues which usually become the victim of attack were ones involved with an injury, nutritional deficiency, old age debilitation, or inherited weakness. The lesions which these bacteria naturally produced were generally located in what he called the "rheumatic group of organs, "causing what he later called the "degenerative diseases."

The organs and tissues most often found to be involved were the heart, eyes, rheumatic and arthritic tissues, kidneys, digestive track and nervous system -but he also found that any tissue could be involved. It is the weak link in the body chain which becomes the victim of the attack. The fundamental point of break is the failure of the host's defense mechanisms to ward off attack; that is, the lessening of the efficiency of thee immune system.

Getting back to Dr.Percy Howe's rabbit's failing to react to his injections of streptococcus bacteria, it should now be easier to see that he was dealing with the bacteria we all have in our mouths on a daily basis. On the other hand, the bacteria Dr.Price's rabbits received were those involved inside of infected teeth where they had gone through polymorphic mutation changes and had become more virile and their toxins more than toxic.

In spite of the fact the bacteria Dr.Howe used were not in their virulent form, his criticism of the focal infection theory developed sufficient following to force the information about Dr.Price's research and that of his illustrious colleagues underground. Another outspoken nonbeliever of Price's work who played a key role in shutting it down was John P. Buckley,Ph D., D.D.S. He was a personal friend of Dr. Price who admired his honesty and conviction and did credit him with stimulating the spirit of research in dentistry more than any person in our profession.

However, Dr. Buckley believed that because the normal tissues of the body are not always germ free, and that with reasonable use of antiseptics and disinfectants dentist seemed to be successful in his research efforts, but felt he was moving too fast and carried out too many projects. Though he recognized Dr. Rosenow as a bacteriologist of note, he assumed Rosenow knew nothing of dental histopathology.

On the other hand, he stated that Drs. Price, Rosenow, Billings, Brophy, Haden, and others were conducting important research. Then, too, Dr. Buckley stated: "I do not doubt the bacteriologic findings of men like Price, rosenow, Haden, and others are correct as far as we understand bacteriology today; but you know and i know there is something wrong with their conclusions based upon these findings when they talk about the safety of pulpless teeth." That feling still prevails among most dentists today.

Because a fair number of patients who have root rilled teeth removed do not experience health improvements, Dr.Buckley failed to see the significance of the very large numbers who do improve. Dr. Price realized that many factors contributed to the outcome of extractions, including the patient's calcium-phosphorus and acid-base balances. In addition, nutritional and metabolic deficiencies were factors he recognized. Also, different causes could create the same diseases, which complicated the whole issue.

To me it is incredible that Dr.Buckley could insist that because so many root filled teeth did not show signs of infection or cause digenerative diseases, root filled teeth could not cause systemic infection. Dentists have to wonder how Dr. Buckley could have overlooked the well-known and accepted possibility of infection trapped in lateral accessory canals after a root filling has been placed. The majority of teachers of endodontia teach their students to warn patients of this possibility and to advise them to have follow-up x-ray pictures every year of their root filled teeth to check on the success of the operation.

Loose Teeth

Gum disease can cause damage to the underlying bone structure that supports your gums and holds your teeth in place. This bone is relatively vulnerable and can be damaged by the effects of bacterial infection.

Some individuals like to state that only people in their thirties and forties develop gum disease. Let's think about that for a minute. Where did that gum disease come from? Didn't it develop over a the last ten, twenty or thirty years? Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease and has been detected in people of all ages.

When a bacterial infection occurs under the gumline, the supporting structure is attacked by the byproducts secreted from the bacteria. Once this structure is eroded you might also notice that the gums have receded. Again, this didn't happen overnight.

One key to avoiding gum disease is to realize that chances are pretty high that you will develop it if you don't already have it. By creating good habits while in your teens or twenties, you can prevent the onset of gum disease later in life. You'll be able to keep your teeth when others lose theirs.

Once the supporting bone structure is compromised the teeth may become loose depending on how bad the damage is. At some point the supporting structure may not be strong enough to support the tooth at all and then it is over. The tooth is lost.

As an adult there is no replacement tooth unless you count dentures or implants. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. Every person on the planet, except for the rare 2 percent who are gum disease resistant, needs to worry about this problem. Make a plan to prevent or combat it and execute that plan on a daily basis.

Starting early is the key to prevention. However, if you failed to start early, you can begin to take steps to prevent your situation from becoming worse. If you fail to take any action, there are still options. But, you may not like those options.

I remember that an older man at a recent gathering said, "there is no substitute for your own teeth". Replacements are poor substitutes for the real thing. I do not believe that most people are too lazy to take care of their teeth. Instead, I believe that they don't understand what will happen if they don't. How many people understand that most of the adult population is afflicted by some stage of gum disease? Most go through their daily lives blind to what is happening just inside their own mouths.

Some people make a distinction between gingivitis and gum disease. One is just the beginning of the other. If you are in your twenties or teens and have been told you have gingivitis, now is the time to become diligent about oral care. Today's gingivitis can develop into tomorrow's periodontal disease. It is just a matter of degree.

Unfortunately, the public is woefully ignorant of gum disease, what it is and what it can do to you as an individual. Again, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. The Mayo Clinics website quips that perhaps up to 80% of the adult population in America has gum disease. Many Americans are fanatical about taking care of their smiles. Yet, so many still develop this disease. You can almost bet the statistics are higher outside of the United States.

You owe it to yourself to find out everything you can to prevent gum disease or fight it once you become aware of it. Ask your dentist about the health of your gums every time you go for a checkup. If you have bleeding during your normal cleaning, you should be aware this is not normal. Even if you bleed a little bit it could very well indicate that you have gingivitis or gum disease.

In addition to the health of your gums, the overall health of your body should also be considered. It is arguably the most important aspect of your life. I have found the exercises of Falun Gong to be very valuable in maintaining health. You can read more about them on the FalunDafa.org website.

If you have or think you might have gum disease, contact your dentist for diagnosis and treatment.

Electric Wheelchairs and Medicare - What You and Your Family Need to Know

It's been an interesting few years for those that follow the relationship between the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare. Fifteen years ago, chances are you never heard of electric wheelchairs. Although they have been around for longer than that, they were not readily available until the past 10 to 12 years.

That's when companies like The Scooter Store and Hoveround began to market the wheelchairs nationally in the same manor that diabetic supply companies promoted diabetic medical supplies that were Medicare covered. When these companies began their national advertising campaigns for electric wheelchairs, the demand for the equipment nearly tripled in under three years (from 1999 to 2002). The Medicare expenditures for these wheelchairs increased by a whopping $556 million over this time period.

This does not, however, mean that the increase has been a bad thing for Medicare. According to a 2005 independent study, the electric wheelchair industry actually saves Medicare billions annually because Medicare people who receive electric wheelchairs tend to be healthier overall and suffer fewer injuries. The study found that the rate of people with broken hips was significantly lower when individuals had electric wheelchairs.

Over the past three to five years, the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare have battled over who should qualify for this type of medical equipment and how much Medicare should pay for those that receive it. Last year, Medicare finally released what seems to be the new directive for pricing and eligibility for electric wheelchairs. Below is a brief overview.

Medicare Electric Wheelchair Eligibility

To be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair through Medicare a person must have what is considered a daily living activity need for it and that need must be inside the home. Medicare currently does not covered electric wheelchairs or scooters for people who exclusively need them outside the home.

Daily living activities include feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and so on. What does this really mean? It means that a person must need the chair to get around inside the home for at least one of these activities. Medicare will only consider the person eligible if he or she cannot conduct these specific daily living requirements with the use of a manual wheelchair, cane, walker or freely.

How Much will an Electric Wheelchair Cost?

The pricing for electric wheelchairs differs throughout the country. Whatever the allowable price is in your area, Medicare will typically pay for 80 percent of the cost. The remaining copayment may be picked up by your supplemental Medicare insurance if you have one. If you do not, you are responsible for the remaining 20 percent (normally between $1,200 and up).

How Do I Get an Electric Wheelchair?

You need to first ask your doctor if you are eligible and if you meet the minimum Medicare requirements. If your doctor says you do, then contact a medical equipment supply company (either a local one or a national one like The Scooter Store or Hoveround). The medical equipment supply company will direct you what to do next.

10 Hints to Get Rid of Offensive Breath Odor Now

You know the feeling, minutes away from a big date or the meeting that can make (or break) your career you discover you have breath odor. It started with that "taste" in your mouth; you know the one that reminds you of what you ate . . . hours ago! You do a simple breath test (cup hand over mouth and breath out) and yep, you got it. It happens to all of us at some point in our life and there are ways to minimize, even eliminate breath odor from happening.

10 Hints to get rid of bad breath:

1. Some medicines can cause breath odor so you should check all medicines you are currently taking. If your doctor has just prescribed a new one it could be the cause. Or an interaction between two or more medicines might be it. Ask at your pharmacy about known side effects of any medicine you take. If you narrow it down to a specific medicine ask your doctor if another medicine could be substituted.

2. Keep track of your food and drink intake over a 7 day period. Within this journal also make note of the time of day you believe you have breath odor. This food journal can help you see a pattern between food choices and your breath odor problem.

3. Be very cautious about continuing to eat the foods that cause breath odor.

4. If you cannot find a pattern between your diet and breath odor you should look for a permanent solution. There are herbal and more standard solutions. Before you spend a small fortune on specific remedies you should know that common household products can get rid of breath odor permanently.

5. One quick way to rid yourself of post-meal breath odor is to chew (DO NOT SWALLOW) on a sprig or parsley or mint for a minute or two before and after your meal. Check your teeth in a mirror to make sure you don't have any flecks between your teeth.

6. Keep a travel-size container of mouthwash or sugar-free gum with you as a backup plan. However, do not suck on peppermints or other sugar containing hard candies or gum. The sugar feeds breath odor causing bacteria that live on your tongue.

7. Increase your water consumption for a fresher breath. You reduce breath odor caused by dry mouth and wash away food particles and excess bacteria from your mouth.

8. The back of your tongue houses bacteria that cause breath odor. Use a tongue scraper to physically remove this 'film' of bacteria.

9. Always brush your tongue, including the back, whenever you brush your teeth.

10. Floss at least once a day. If possible floss after each meal, but if once a day is the only option, do it at night right before you brush your teeth at bedtime. Food particles caught between your teeth, if not removed, can cause breath odor as these decay.
